Indonesian Traditional Drinks
Did you know that Indonesia consists over 700 ethnic groups? Each has cultural heritages and culinary diversity. Not only does each province have its own traditional foods, but there are also many unique traditional drinks of Indonesia that reflect the local wisdom, natural resources, and community traditions. From refreshing iced desserts to warming herbal concoctions, these drinks represent the country’s multicultural identity.
Traditional Drinks from Sumatra
- Nira - Aceh and North Sumatra
Nira is the sap extracted from palm or coconut flowers. It has a naturally sweet taste and can be consumed fresh or fermented into a traditional alcoholic drink known as tuak.
- Teh talua - West Sumatra
A unique Minangkabau drink made from whisked egg yolk, sugar, and hot tea. It is creamy, energizing, and considered a special treat for guests.
Traditional Drinks from Java
- Wedang jahe - Central Java and Yogyakarta
This famous Javanese drink is made from ginger, palm sugar, and sometimes enriched with spices like lemongrass or cloves. Wedang jahe is popular as a natural remedy to warm the body and boost stamina.
- Cendol - West Java
Cendol is a refreshing iced drink made from rice flour jelly, coconut milk, and palm sugar syrup. It is sweet, creamy, and perfect for hot tropical days. Cendol is so iconic that it has gained international recognition as one of the best Indonesian traditional drinks.
- Cuing - West Java
Similar to cendol but made from tapioca flour, cuing has a chewy texture and is served with palm sugar and coconut milk. It is both refreshing and filling.
- Bandrek - West Java
Bandrek is a warming beverage made from ginger, palm sugar, coconut flesh, and sometimes milk. It is often enjoyed during cold nights or rainy seasons.
Traditional Drinks from Kalimantan and Sulawesi
- Aloe vera ice - West Kalimantan
This cooling drink uses fresh aloe vera pieces mixed with syrup and ice. Besides being refreshing, it is believed to be good for digestion and skin health.
- Sarabba - South Sulawesi
Sarabba is similar to bandrek but with the addition of egg yolk and coconut milk. It is a favorite in Makassar, especially at night.
Traditional Drinks from Bali, Nusa Tenggara, and Beyond
- Loloh - Bali
A Balinese herbal drink made from local leaves such as cemcem leaves, combined with spices. Loloh is believed to improve health and immunity.
- Nira drink - East Nusa Tenggara
Just like in Sumatra, fresh nira is also popular in NTT. It is often served immediately after tapping from the palm tree, offering a naturally sweet refreshment.
Traditional Drinks from Maluku & Papua
- Sagero (Maluku)
A drink made from fermented palm sap, often enjoyed during traditional gatherings and ceremonies.
- Matoa Ice (Papua)
Made from the exotic matoa fruit mixed with ice and syrup, this drink highlights the uniqueness of Papua’s tropical produce.
